Meet the Interns: Abby Kelly (as told by Ariell Christian!)

By: Chris Loney | Friday, August 9, 2013

For our blog post this week (and my last post, as I wrap up the end of my internship at uAspire), I sat down with Abigail Kelly, another intern, to talk about her experience working here this summer.

What kinds of projects have you been involved with here at uAspire this summer?

I’m on the Research and Evaluations team, so most of my time has been focused on working with data (student data from surveys, records about how students have done in college since working with uAspire, etc.) to figure out how well uAspire is helping their students. So many excel spreadsheets and charts and graphs!

Another part of my job has been to help with Summer College Connect, which is a uAspire program that reaches out to students during the summer after their senior year of high school to remind them about college finance deadlines – bill, health insurance, loan set-up.

I’ve also hopped onto some other smaller projects, as well. I made a video with the help of all the other interns. Courtney and I are helping with a temporary job search. And we interns have done arts and crafts for multiple events – last week three of us made 30 paper college pennants for a scholarship event.

What have your learned from working at uAspire?

When I have a full time job in a few years, I want to work in a place where everyone really believes in the work that is being done. uAspire staff have this unified drive to help students that makes the work feel worthwhile.

I’ve gotten really comfortable with excel – good life skill, right?

I have figured out (mostly) how to make it through an 8-hour workday without coffee!

What’s your favorite part of office life?

I really love the people who work at uApire. Everyone gets along and is supportive and positive almost to an extreme. Every Wednesday, the advisors bring in food – last week was cinnamon buns, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love cinnamon buns?

And I love my fellow interns. It’s nice to have people to eat lunch with, complain about the cold with (the AC is so high one of us actually brought in a snuggy), laugh about work with, and eat cinnamon buns with.

What do you do in your life outside of uAspire?

Well, I love music. I spend a lot of my free time at school singing in choirs and musicals.

Abby and I see eye to eye: working for uAspire has been one my greatest experiences. I have gained so many skills and made amazing friends. I appreciate my time here and look forward to coming back to finish my summer as a volunteer to stay connected to uAspire!
